Remote sensing from above the earth was first attempted by Gaspard Felix Tournachon, who took photographs of a village in France from a hot air balloon. A year later, James Wallace Black duplicated the technique in Boston. The method can still be used, however, it still requires the same amount of planning as the use of airplanes if quality photographs are expected.
