Band is the term used to describe the range of wavelengths collected and analyzed for one image. For example, band 3 on the AVHRR collects light from wavelengths 3.55-3.93 µm, which will show forest fires and nighttime clouds on one image. If you desire to see snow and ice extent, you would request an image using band 2 from the AVHRR.
