The electromagnetic spectrum describes the different wavelengths of light. Each wavelength allows us to see something different. For example, when you see the color green, you are looking at a material that is reflecting green light (wavelengths 0.55-0.6 µm) and absorbing red (0.6-0.7 µm) and blue (0.4-0.55 µm) light. There are many more wavelengths of light that those visible to human eyesight. Of importance to land managers are the infrared wavelengths. The image below shows which wavelengths are reflected most by 3 different types of vegetation. These reflectances are detected by remote sensing equipment.
